Daar begint verandering in te komen, want zo langzamerhand is hij in de wandelgangen een van de meest besproken acts. Wat zal de in Balkan beats en aanverwant repertoire gespecialiseerde Kees zijn publiek nu weer gaan voorschotelen? En hoe zal dat publiek zich gaan gedragen? Het is immers de gewoonte om bij Kees op de dansvloer te verschijnen met minstens een paar takken en als het even kan ook een opblaasbeest. Kijk maar eens op www.keesvanhondt.nl hoe dat eruitzag op Sziget. Duizenden dansende mensen in een feesttent, zwaaiend met takken boven hun hoofd, terwijl de opblaasbeesten in het rond vliegen en Kees de ene degelijke deun na de andere op de draaitafels legt. Voor wie er op Lowlands niet bij kan zijn en voor wie er niet genoeg van kan krijgen: de kaarten voor Derde Keesdag op 27 december in Tivoli Utrecht zijn net in de voorverkoop gegaan.
De hoeveelste Lowlands is dit voor je?
‘Als ik goed heb geteld dan is dit de zesde keer. De eerste keer stond alleen m’n broer in de tent toen ik begon, en moet je nou es kijken. Vorig jaar was ik bang dat de India misschien wat groot zou zijn maar hij puilde helemaal uit. Wat ik mooi vind is dat ondanks dat het altijd een enorme rotzooi lijkt tijdens de optredens, het publiek zich toch altijd Keeswaardig gedraagt.’
Voor de hoeveelste keer ga je naar Lowlands als artiest?
‘Dat is dan ook de zesde keer. Het is leuk dat er altijd een paar goede feestbands spelen op Lowlands. Dit jaar verheug ik me op de optredens van Andra Generationen, Klavan Gadjé, Finntroll en La Pegatina.’
Wat was je mooiste Lowlands moment?
‘Zonder twijfel het moment dat er een enorme vuilnisbak de tent in werd gedragen, volgens mij ook nog bovenop een picknicktafel. Die vuilnisbak ging open en er stak een hoofd van een jongen uit die vervolgens een foto ging maken. Op Sziget ging er vorige week een Dixie, zo’n mobiel toilet, door het publiek, zeer apart maar dat was Sziget.’
Wat was je meest vervelende Lowlands moment?
‘Dat is er eigenlijk niet. Of ja, toch wel, twee jaar geleden moest ik op maandag het terrein op om een fiets op te halen, het regende en de hele Keestent was afgebroken. Het gevoel dat het weer definitief was afgelopen vond ik niet heel fijn. In de auto op weg naar huis hebben we toen het hele repertoire van Pigmeat gedraaid, werd het toch nog een leuke dag,want ik vind wel dat je van iedere dag een feestdag moet proberen te maken.’
Lowlands is je visitekaartje voor een groot publiek, ga je iets speciaals doen?
‘Speciaal doen? Ik heb de stellige indruk dat het Lowlandspubliek de Kees-optredens redelijk speciaal vindt. Er is geloof ik niet echt iets wat je er mee kan vergelijken. In het najaar wil ik graag een Zeven Provinciën toer starten, en er zijn een paar mensen uit m’n omgeving die daardoor aan schepen en water zijn gaan denken. Het is voor mij ook altijd weer een verrassing wat er gebeurt.’
Met wie zou je ooit nog een twee-secondentent op willen zetten?
‘Ik ben geboren met twee linkerhanden, dus het lijkt me het handigst als ik dit soort risicovolle projecten uit handen geef. En dan is m’n broer de uitgelezen persoon om dit klusje naar behoren te klaren.’
Stel je wordt gevraagd voor een dj-set in de Groove Tube, welke plaat zou je zeker draaien?
‘Daar ben ik wel eens doorheen gelopen, da’s veel hiphop enzo. Nou misschien dat ik dan ‘Doos Dronk’ van Die Antwoord zou draaien, maar het lijkt me wel heel raar als ze me daar voor zouden vragen. Daar staan toch heel veel picknicktafels?’
